September 21 – Tech Talk Presentation:
Good morning to all, and welcome to the third edition of our Tech Talk sessions; there will be one more, next Thursday, then nothing more until January. Is there anyone here who is not on our Tech Talk email list? Are there any questions from the previous two weeks before we begin? Cyber-Seniors: Did you know, Government of Canada reports; People across the country spend a lot of their time online, and Canadians aged 65 and older represent the fastest growing group of Internet users. Furthermore, among senior Internet users, approximately 70% go online every day. Let’s start by talking about the Westwood Cyber-Seniors project; - It has been approved by Rhonda Fenton - The Westwood Cyber-Seniors membership has already been purchased - All available Cyber-Seniors videos have been downloaded - Preliminary plans are to upgrade the current equipment in the Internet Cafe, improve the Wi-fi throughput capability where necessary, and perhaps purchase a new widescreen TV and portable cart for screenings in the Country Kitchen (or Dining Room, or elsewhere) Mount Boucherie high school has been approached regarding setting up a student mentorship program, perhaps to include some of our dining room servers. I think we all understand that learning to use new technology at our ages requires some extra effort! Let’s watch this 4 minute video about effective training for seniors. Are there any questions?
Last but not least, we hope to get the project underway in January. Website Domain Names:
We currently do not own a Domain Name for The Westwood Wire, but are running is as a subsidiary of the Weebly website development company. Due to our success so far, we expect to purchase our own website Domain Name in December – I expect that name will be www.the-westwood-wire. Info When we do that, everyone will have to change their website access shortcut or URL address, and we will give everyone lots of notice and help in doing that. Are there any questions? YouTube:
OK, it’s time to have some fun, but we’ll start with statistics; - number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000 - 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute - almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day. How many of you go to YouTube for entertainment or information? Just type www.youtube.com into your address bar, and you’ll see a screen something like this; Click on image to enlarge: Let’s search for “funny cat video” to start; Click on image to enlarge: Much like using Google Search, we immediately get more than
73 million results! YouTube Search's ranking algorithm is just as complex and clearly Google's secret. Most search experts agree there are about 200 plus ranking factors in Google Search and the same could be for YouTube. Let’s pick one to start, maybe this one... “Cats are so funny you will die laughing” with over 54 million views. Click on image to enlarge: Notice that as soon as we open one, we immediately see a sidebar with other similar videos – thousands of them! Let’s try looking for a tutorial, perhaps “create a shortcut in Internet Explorer”. This time we get 22,000 results, who knows? Let’s just try the first one; Click on image to enlarge: Let’s try “clean a coffeemaker”; only 298,000 results! Click on image to enlarge: Your turn, what would you like to search for? > > > > That concludes this week’s Tech Talk, next week will be our last one until January. How many of you would like to just watch the 54 minute version of the Cyber-Seniors documentary next week? Comments are closed.
