Agenda for September 14 Tech Talk: Good morning to all who are attending this week, and I have one housekeeping announcement; I have prepared a group email list for attendees so that I can send you meeting agendas in advance and links to the various thing we discuss. That list is going around right now; - if you are not on the list but would like to be, please add your name, suite number, and email address at the bottom - if you are on the list but do not want emails, please just cross your name off on the list Last week we talked about Cyber-Seniors, navigating the Westwood website, and adding a Desktop Shortcut on your Windows Desktop. Are there any questions relating to last week? Okay, let’s get started, first let me repeat our objectives for these Tech Talk sessions; Tech Talk sessions; - Must be easy to watch - Must be easy to understand - Must be interesting and informative Our agenda this week is about Jigsaw Puzzles, Google Chrome, Google Maps, and Google Earth and, of course, Cyber Seniors! Magic Jigsaw Puzzles;
If you are using Windows software newer than Windows 7 you can get Magic Puzzles from the MS Store, or you can download from the Internet. It is free, and you can get a new puzzle every day. Many people including myself find it a good stress reliever. I do one every morning to kickstart my brain! Here is the intro to a puzzle started, but not completed. Click on image to enlarge: Note that you can choose the number of pieces, I usually do 140 pieces, a friend of mine does 620, it often takes 2 or 3 days to complete. This is what happens once you pick the number of pieces then click on the puzzle; Click on image to enlarge: For the Internet link to download Magic Jigsaw Puzzles, click on Puzzles Click on image to enlarge: Are there any questions about Magic Jigsaw Puzzles? Google Chrome; How many of you already use Google Chrome as your Internet browser? This is what a “new page” in Chrome looks like, and I set mine to open with Google.ca search window. Click on image to enlarge: Why use Chrome? It is simply the best in the world now and has been for over 10 years. - More than 2 billion people worldwide use Chrome as their Internet web browser - Chrome’s share of all web browsers (July 24, 2017) is 53.9% - Chrome protects users from malicious websites 205 million times/month You can download it from any search window by typing in “download google chrome”. Any questions? Google Maps;
- One billion people use Google Maps each month - 41% of Internet users worldwide use Google Maps How many of you use Google Maps? Let’s run a Google Maps option, perhaps from Westwood to the Dirty Laundry winery; this is what I see when I call up Google Maps, I have Maps set to my Home Address; Click on image to enlarge:
When I click on the blue directions sign in the search box, and put in “dirty laundry winery”, this is what I get; Click on image to enlarge: The map and the turn by turn directions can be printed out. Are there any questions? Simply, these Google products are the best, and part of the reason is that all were developed and intended for real people, not just big businesses and professionals. Let's just do a Google Search for Google Earth and see;
Click on image to enlarge: After we start Google Earth and get past the introduction, this is what the Earth search screen looks like; Click on image to enlarge: We’ll start by watching a segment from the Cyber-Seniors documentary; Click the Play button on the video, for full screen click on arrows at bottom right, ESC to exit full screen: What do you all think? Any questions? Do you want to try it? I’m going to start; - I grew up on a farm in Prince Edward County, Ontario - the farm community was called West Lake - our address was just Rural Route 1, Picton, Ontario I am going to search for West Lake, Prince Edward County, Ontario, this is what I got; Click on image to enlarge: That’s pretty neat, eh? I know exactly where the farm was, so I am going to zoom in and go to a road spot in front of our farm. Click on image to enlarge: And now I drag the “peg man” to that spot on the road to go to a Street View. And here is the house I grew up in, now an Ontario Heritage House in a Provincial Park. Click on image to enlarge: Is that amazing or what? Who else wants to try it? Give me a location to search for. Cyber-Seniors: Very good news, I met with Rhonda and Christie this morning, we have a full go-ahead from Regency Westwood. That “go-ahead” includes full membership in the Cyber-Seniors program, new or upgraded computer technology as needed for Westwood, and full support for the necessary Mentorship Program. We plan for that mentorship to include a number of our dining room servers, all of who you already know and who know you as well. We expect to arrange for them to get course credits for being mentors. Our expected kick-off date will be mid-January. Wrapup: This presentation outline and the photos will be posted to the Westwood website, and I will send a link to everyone for whom I have an email address. Comments are closed.
